Chapter 33

Clubbing

Life had sure changed for Danny. He had gone from being an out of work millie, to being one of the most popular men in town, and it had only taken a few short months. People were telling him, he should run for political office; maybe county commissioner, or mayor. To top it all off, he was marrying the brightest, wealthiest, most attractive young woman in the whole county. Maybe in the whole state, Danny thought. "Damn, you're one lucky S O B," Danny said to himself.

"What was that, Baby?" Regina asked from in the kitchen.

"I was just telling myself how lucky I am to have you," Danny said as he walked into the kitchen.

"You really think so?" Regina asked.

"I wouldn't have said it if I didn't mean it."

"Daddy seemed okay with the idea of us getting married. Do you think the two of you are going to get along all right?"

"Best I can tell," Danny answered. "Of course, I don't see him inviting me to the country club any time soon."

"Well," Regina said, "as a matter of fact, he told me he'd like you to come visit him at the club one day next week."

"What for?"

"I think he just wants to get to know you better."

"Okay, as long as he doesn't want me to be a part of a threesome with him and Junior. I don't want to be anywhere near your brother when he's holding a nine iron."

"Oh you're too cruel," Regina laughed. "You know little Junior wouldn't do a thing to hurt you."

"Yeah right," he laughed. "Were you surprised your dad and I got along so well together?"

"Really I was. I was really worried Daddy was going to be so upset over your's and Junior's fighting that he'd never give you a chance."

"Yeah, me too."

"So where do you want to get married?" Regina asked.

"Depends on how big a wedding you're planning."

"Daddy said it would be the biggest wedding this town would ever see."

"Wow," Danny replied, "gonna have to be a really big place then."

"How about Daddy's mansion?"

"How about your mansion?" Danny asked. "It should be finished before then."

"You mean our mansion," Regina said.

"Okay, our mansion."

*****

"Mrs. Wilson," Regina said as she rocked in a chair on Mrs. Wilson's porch, "how would you feel about living with Danny and I when we move into our new home?"

"For what, Miss Regina? I don't need a job. I draw a nice pension from the hospital. I worked there forty-five years, and I've got my Social-Security too."

"Oh no, Mrs.Wilson. I don't want you to be a maid, or a house keeper. I admit Danny and I both love your cooking, but that's not why I asked."

"Well why, pray tell, do you want me to live there?"

"I want you to be my momma," Regina answered. "Danny and I both talked about it, and we both agree you're just like a mother to both of us, and we'd like to have you come live with us next spring."

"Lord, I don't know, child. Why it's just now going on Christmas. Why don't we give it some time before I make up my mind?"

"Okay," Regina smiled, "you just say when, and we'll start packing your things."

"My, my, I been in this house since I was nineteen years old. I never even dreamed about moving."

"Well you can dream about it now," Regina said.

"I'll have to have a long talk with my Roy."

"Well, just pack his jar, and bring him too."

"Well you had better believe that if I move anywhere, my Roy will be moving with me," Mrs. Wilson said with a laugh. "You are one crazy youngin', Miss Regina."
