Comic Review
Feb 12, 2008 at 06:17PM A Great New Book Hot Off The Presses
I wrote a couple months ago about a comics artist who has been one of my favorites for a long while now: Basil Wolverton.
His work is unmistakeable. The problem is that - up until now - it's been hard to find a solid, extensive collection of his work. I provided, in my last write-up a couple links to collections of particular strips. But anthologies of his best work - caricatures that are often bizarre and/or grostesque (my kind of stuff, natch) - have all been out of print for decades now.
Well, the wait is over. And, boy howdy, when it rains, it pours. Lasp Gasp and Grand Central Press present "The Original Art of Basil Wolverton" - 200 fantastic pages of early, classic and late works by the genius of the grostesque, all shot from original artwork in the collection of Glenn Bray.
You'll find tons of strips and gag art, as well as caricatures galore. The quality of the reproductions is jaw-dropping. And there's lots of previously unavailable and unpublished pieces on display. It's well worth checking out.
