Desiree didn’t talk with the other birds very much for the next few days and everyone was worried that she wasn’t her usual chipper self. Hector saw it too, so he decided to see if Sidney could help. “After all,” Hector said, “you’re both females, you might understand better than I do.”
Sidney wasted no time in talking with Desiree about what had happened. “Desiree,” Sidney asked, “are you okay, Honey?”
“Why do you ask?” Desiree replied not wanting to talk to anyone about it.
“Well for starters you haven’t sang a song since the other night when you slipped off to be alone with Hector,” Sidney replied.
“So you know too,” Desiree said.
“Honey,” Sidney said, “everybody knows and they’re all worried about you.”
“They are?” Desiree questioned. “Why would anyone worry about me?”
“Because they love you,” Sidney answered.
“They do?”
“Of course they do.”
“But Hector doesn’t love me.”
“Yes he does,” Sidney said.
“But he’s in love with Maria, whoever she is,” Desiree asked, “how can he be in love with me?”
“Well it’s not the same kind of love,” Sidney explained, “but Hector does love you.”
“But I want Hector to love me like he loves Maria.”
“Listen Honey,” Sidney explained, “there’s always another bird flying by. If you don’t catch the first one then try pecking on another one.”
“Really?” Desiree asked, still unsure of what she was hearing.
“Sure,” Sidney replied, “just look at that new Chickadee, Pierre. Look how cute he is. Why if I didn’t have my Jeff I’d be pecking on him myself.”
“Wow!” Desiree exclaimed, “I never noticed him before.”
“Remember when your mother was teaching you how to fly?” Sidney asked.
“Yes, sort of.”
“She taught you to always keep your eyes on the horizon. Your eyes have been so full of Hector that you let him block your view of the horizon. That’s why you crashed, Honey.”
“I got to go chirp with Pierre,” Desiree said as she flew away. “That is one gorgeous bird.”
“Happy hunting,” Sidney laughed as she watched Desiree fly away.
After the little chirp that Sidney had with Desiree, Desiree seemed to be fine and Hector was back on the path that everyone hoped would lead them across the ocean to Asia. They decided to fly mostly at night as the winds weren’t quite so strong after the sun dropped below the horizon.
