The Connection

There's really very little I can add...

"People have told me, " Don't take the internet seriously. They have told me, "Those people aren't REAL. They have told me a lot about the internet.

I have heard story after story of heartache. I have witnessed pain, sorrow and intense love. I have seen peoples hearts printed out for the world to see, in hopes it will touch someone."
Please continue reading.

Via my lovely and smart connection, Veronica.

Bomomo wants to play too.

Blacklisted

Veronica gives us her list of 8 words I wish I never had to hear again.

I concur.

In the meantime I think I'll get underneath it all.

Ask The Advice Girl

More timely than Dear Abby and better looking than Ann Landers, The Advice Girl is the person to ask when you need modern day advice on issues of the heart. With over a decade of hands-on experience and a Masters degree in Psychology, The Advice Girl is without a doubt the person to ask.

And yes, I do know who she is but I ain't telling.

More Sites Added To Poetsarus

I fed several more poets to the search engine at Poetsarus.com tonight. If you're an online poet you can leave your link here or send it via e-mail to idleblogs (AT) yahoo.com with the word "Poetsarus.com" in the subject line of your e-mail.

Please use the search bar at Poetsarus.com to check to see if your site is there before asking me to add yours as double submission is of no advantage to you and harms the overall effectiveness of the search. Also, I usually add sites every couple of weeks or so as it's easier to add them in batches.

And please, don't assume your site is in there just because I've linked to you in the past as I'm terribly lacking in organizational skills.

Smarter Than Your Average TV News Dude

I've known Stewart Pittman for going on 4 years and throughout that time I've been a regular reader of his blog. His grasp of language is that of the greatest of novelists and not what one expects from a high school graduate who earns his living pointing television news cameras at the latest overturned car on the highway as the talking head mistakenly identifies US 29 as Interstate 29 or tells us the car ran across the shoulder of the highway when in-fact it jumped the median. (Median = middle, get it?)

Stewart walks a fine line when he blogs about the behind the scenes of local television news. His extraordinary talent along with the help of a few area bloggers has made him well-known locally and nationally, and have no doubt his bosses read not only what Stewart writes but what the rest of us write about him. Stew's most recent post, Stumbling into Punditry, is exactly what I'm talking about.

Being a great writer requires guts but it also requires discretion. Stewart has both while I'm still working on the latter.

Goodbye Russia By Veronica Romm

"A little girl I am whisked away. All together, Mama, Papa and Babushka (grandma) board a plane to who knows where. We all land safely, on some ground. I ask “Is this where we are moving to?”

“No, dear not yet, this is where we wait.” I am told.

Wait?  Alright then, it is a lovely place. Near the beach we stay with Senora Maria. They don’t speak my language here, I quickly realize.  They speak Italian, we are in Lodispoli, somewhere south of Rome, Mama tells me.  There are children there and they are friendly, we play outside, mostly on the beach and I learn “ciao” and many new words as I play each day.  I understand them soon enough and they laugh when I say something funny in Italian but they help me and I learn.

Three months fly by and the wait is over, we must board another plane. Babushka is tired and somewhat ill; she seems scared as mama and papa explain that we have the “Visa’s” whatever those are, but they are happy so I know it must be a good thing. As the plane lands safely once again I ask “Is this where we are going to live?”  Mama says yes while busy making sure our parcels are all there."
Please continue reading Goodbye Russia.

Shorpy Higginbotham

Henry Sharpe Higginbotham was a 14 year old boy who worked in the Alabama coal mines circa 1910. Shorpy was born in Jefferson County, Alabama, to Phelix Milton Higginbotham and the former Mary Jane Graham. He would go on to serve in World War I only to return home from the war and die in the mine at the ripe old age of 31 leaving behind a wife and an unborn son.

Shorpy_higginbotham.jpg

I found Shorpy's photo at the 100 Year Old Photo Blog, Shorpy.com where you'll find more American history as well as a link to Mornings On Maple Street where more can be learned about Shorpy's life.

Might I remind you all that this was the way of life in the time of "market based capitalism" and let it serve as a reminder to those of you whose fathers didn't have to live under the rule of unregulated businesses. Please keep Shorpy and my Daddy (born 1928 and working full time as a sharecropper at 13) in mind when you go to the polls to cast your ballots.
