Canada Discovers North American Poet Laureate Billy Jones
Our visit with Discovery Channel Canada was both informative and enjoyable. I know I for one dug the hell out of riding around downtown Greensboro, stopping here and there to engage in some guerrilla filmmaking. It was a learning experience for this aspiring auteur...
And I was able to get our own photographic record of what transpired. I winnowed my hundred or so photos down to these twelve, which I think tell the story quite nicely.
Thanks again to Lori Belanger, producer of the Daily Planet on Discovery Channel Canada and their fantastic cameraman, Ross MacIntosh.
Jack Sprat Cafe
Locally Owned Cafe And Bistro In Chapel Hill
On our way to Duke to check out the Dr. Lonnie Smith Trio featuring Lou Donaldson, David "Fathead" Newman and Houston Person, we stopped off at Chapel Hill to while away some time and let it snow profusely. So Tina and I decided to drop in on our new favorite eatery and drinkery on E. Franklin: Jack Sprat Cafe, located at 161 E. Franklin. Their phone number is 933-3575.
They had the UNC basketball game on the big screen (much to Tina's delight) and funky art on the walls, courtesy of Nevton Diniz.
We heartily recommend the Bruscetta. They also have a daily Chef's Special. "We've got a real chef now," manager Steve Dorozenski told us. "He blows me away. I used to make my own Hollandaise sauce, and it was better than anybody else's around. Then I tried his..." And blow us away he did. The bruscetta is to die for.
The cafe is locally owned and operated, and they get their coffee from the Carrboro Coffee Company. They also regularly host live music, though we haven't made it to any of the shows yet. You can find more info and a schedule of upcoming events here.
Paperback Exchange
Buy, Sell or Trade Your Paperbacks In Kernersville
On our way back from Payne Road, not far from where SR 66 meets back up with I-40, Tina noticed a sign that said BOOKS in big letters. Having only somewhere around 2000 in my personal collection, she knew I desperately needed a few more and agreed to stop.
The proprietress, K. C. Grieser, told us how the store worked: She gives a flat 25% of the publisher's price in store credit and prices all her paperbacks at half the publisher's price (or a dollar minimum).
And she guarantees to buy back any volume bought (and stamped) at Paperback Exchange.
"It's not about the money, it's about the books," she told us, while I scoured the long aisles and Tina let one of her several birds (a parakeet named Wu) nibble on her hair. She's been in business eight years now at the same location.
Stop in and browse. Bring in your classics and your science fiction (it's what K. C. says she needs most) for trade credit. The store's pleasantly arranged, with comfy chairs here and there to encourage in-depth browsing, and a nice display of rocks and minerals from around the world to dazzle the eye. And K. C. is as friendly as can be.
Tell her Team Blogsboro sent you.
The Paperback Exchange is located at 212 N. Cherry Street, in Kernersville, and the phone number is 336.992.2665.
