Additions To The Family
Say hello to the two newest girls in my family-- Snow White and Nelly. Snow and Nelly came to live with me last Friday night and both are getting along well with the other hens and tolerating my rooster, Gus.

Nelly is a Turken, also known as a naked neck chicken and Snow's heritage is unknown. That's my oldest hen, Elizabeth, behind them eating the apple core. They're still very timid and usually keep to themselves constantly peeping at each other in order to remain close together. I arranged the bicycles in such a way as to allow them to hide from Gus.
Both are about 3 months old, much smaller than my adult birds and about 3 months away from laying their first eggs.
Earlier this week, Elizabeth found her way into my garden and picked my largest tomato. It took me several days but I finally caught her in the act of breaking through the garden fence and closed the hole-- a slit in the plastic fence that I had previously never seen.

Were they bred to have naked necks? Nelly and her kin I mean. Are you going to knit her a scarf for when it gets chilly?
I have never seen a chicken like Nelly (with a naked neck ) bless...
Clever Elizabeth :-D
Verona,
They are bred this way so they are more heat tolerant. I was thinking of making her a long spiked collar.
Stacy,
Actually Elizabeth is the smartest and calmest of all my birds but that may be because she's older.
